Out West

Now that the weather has gotten nicer, we are super excited to start going out on little excursions.  To finish up the Easter Break week, we loaded up the car and headed out towards the farthest western point on Sjælland (the island we live on).  Our first stop was Holbæk, where we stopped and took some pictures of a church.  This one looked different than most. I just love all the little old churches here.  They are all usually 400-800 years old and just beautiful!

In Holbæk, we went down to the beach to have lunch.  It was a pretty little park, with an old windmill and some great views.

After leaving there, we decided to check our gps for local attractions and saw that we were close to a castle.  Løvenborg Castle was more of a grand Manor house.  I had a really hard time finding out any information about it.  I believe the building now dates back to the 1700's.  It's privately owned and judging from the bbq grill in the backyard, it's mostly just used as a home.  I think they continue to do farming and logging and such from the area.  The grounds were quite beautiful and we enjoyed walking through them.

I can't believe we don't have a better picture of this.  Its a sundial.  It had a lot of the metal things sticking out and they all showed the right time.  Very cool!

After that, we drove to Kalundborg.  I had seen that there was a unique church in the city, so that was our goal.  I don't know if we just went at a bad time, but the city seemed all but deserted.  We made it to the church, but it was a little underwhelming.  I was surprised when I looked it up online that the church dates back to the early 13th century and is being considered for placement on the Unesco World Heritage site list.  It was definitely different than any we've seen, but we spent just about 10 minutes walking around it and back to the car before taking off again.  I think if we could have gotten a different view, not so close up, it would have been neater to look at.

After this, we decided to head out to one last destination.  Rosnæs is the farthest western point on the island that we live on.  There is a lighthouse on the edge of the peninsula which sits in a little nature park.  The lighthouse was closed to climbing that day, but we enjoyed a beautiful walk out to it.

It was a very fun day for exploring!
